The kickoff was given this Sunday morning at 6:25 AM on the Centenary Beach in Nice, from which 2,800 athletes set off. On the program, 3.8 kilometers of swimming, a 180-kilometer bike course in the Nice hinterland with a positive elevation gain of 1,600 meters, and finally, a 42.195-kilometer marathon.
It is the professional triathletes who started the event, setting off 5 minutes before the amateurs. The mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, was present for the event, accompanied by Valérie Nicolas, former player of the French women’s handball team.
At 6:30 AM, the many spectators who came to cheer on the athletes were able to witness the beginning of the swimming event, which is always very impressive with all these men and women diving into the water simultaneously.
At the end of the three sections of the race, the favorites prevailed. Belgian Bart Aernouts won this tenth edition of the Nice Ironman, ahead of Spaniard Victor Del Corral Morales. Tyler Butterfield completed the podium.
The first Frenchman finished just behind. It was Jeremy Jurkiewicz, who notably fell during the cycling event.
Bertrand Billard, who was leading after the swim-bike segments, lost ground during the marathon and finished in sixth place.
The first woman was Belgian Tine Deckers, who was followed by two Americans.
