Emerging festival of the French Riviera, A Festival Too Short gathers each year the best of young European creation through numerous competitive programs centered around a cinematic genre, the short film. With 8,000 spectators in 2011, the festival programs over 170 films from all across Europe: Singular, innovative, rare, or previously unreleased works.
“A film is an artist’s gesture, sometimes a deep thought, an inquiry, a state of affairs, or an attempt, poetic or artistic, to represent the world. For 12 years, the Nice Short Film Festival has been bringing cinema closer to the public, with humor, tenderness, and humanity,” said Laurent Tremeau, Artistic Director.
The call for films for the official selection has been closed since last May 25th, reaching a new record of 1,555 film entries. For the 12th edition of the festival, 44 films are in the running for the European Competition. A selection from 19 countries, including 3 represented for the first time: Estonia, Finland, and Greece.
Alongside the European Competition, the festival will offer 3 other thematic competitions: Local Shorts (films shot and produced in the PACA region), Experience (competition of Experimental films, video art, new cinema), and Animated Shorts (competition of French-speaking animation school films).
Each selection will be subject to the votes of a professional jury that will award various prizes totaling 10,000 euros in cash and technical services, during the Closing Ceremony of the festival on Saturday, October 27, 2012.
Since its inception, the festival has offered to discover the richness of European cinematography, highlighting a different country every year.
The Nice festival is also a platform for creation and exchange, with the professional day, Nice Short Meeting, making its debut at a new venue, the Maison des Associations (place Garibaldi), on Friday, October 26 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Nice Short Meeting brings into perspective the artistic and economic challenges of short films with training workshops, author/producer meetings, thematic round tables, debates, and screenings.
A week rich in discoveries to approach the short film from all angles. Through thematic programs and special screenings, the festival offers to explore fantastic cinema (with The Short Film is Fantastic), music videos (with Scopitone), documentaries (with special screenings), video art (with Video Art on Big Screen) and also to cross the boundaries of cinema with Crossing Borders #3.
A Festival Too Short has been fostering for many years the encounter between different audiences by blending music and cinema through cine-concerts, exceptional moments that add a particular dimension to the spirit of the festival.
Three musical events will punctuate this week of screenings with the Opening Ceremony at the Lino Ventura Theatre on Tuesday, October 23, the Stone Bowels Cine-concert at Le Volume on Thursday, October 25, and the Closing Party at B Spot on Saturday, October 27.
