Nice celebrates the 800th anniversary of the elevation of the County of Savoy to a duchy at the Municipal Archives and offers, until February 26, 2016, an exhibition titled “1416: Nice and Savoy, from County to Duchy,” which traces the historical moments of this event with previously unseen documents.
February 19, 1416: the elevation of the County of Savoy to a duchy.
It was in the courtyard of the Chambรฉry castle that Amadeus VIII, Count of Savoy, was raised by Sigismund, King of the Romans, to the dignity of prince and duke, with all the preeminence, dignity, power, freedom, and honors attached to the functions of a duke of the Holy Empire for him and his legitimate heirs.
To celebrate the 800th anniversary of this event, the Nice Archives present a selection of rare treasures: a contemporary copy of the “dedition” act of Nice to Savoy from September 28, 1388, the magnificent illuminated ducal statutes offered by Amadeus VIII to the people of Nice, two 16th-century collections of privileges adorned with coats of arms, charters sealed with red wax, as well as engraved maps and plans to rediscover the power of the States of Savoy.
A guided tour of the exhibition and archives will also be offered this Monday, February 22 at 4 PM.
