On September 16, the 6th World Cleanup Day took place. It is a day that gathers citizens internationally around the collection of waste that pollutes our planet.
For the sixth edition of World Cleanup Day in Nice, more than 120,000 cigarette butts were picked up. “A gesture for the sea,” Foundation for the Sea, Bleu Gorgone, and Nice Plogging are among the associations fighting against pollution. They gathered once more this year. The initiative aims to come together to pick up the waste surrounding us.
Starting at 9:30 am on the Quai Rauba Capeu, many citizens of Nice participated in the event. After receiving instructions and a distribution of gloves and grabbers, the residents of the French Riviera dispersed. They collected plastic bottles, papers, aluminum cans, various plastics…
Some waste was barely identifiable, not forgetting an excessive number of cigarette butts. โYet, there are plenty of trash bins along the Promenade,โ lamented a participant of the World Cleanup Day.
750 kg more waste in 2023
It was in front of the iconic #ILoveNice that the waste was gathered.
In 2022, 750 kg were collected. Pierre-Paul Leonelli, deputy mayor of cleanliness, announced the amount of waste collected this morning.
โThis morning, all together, we collected 1,800 kg of waste.โ This is 1,050 kg more than during the fifth edition, an alarming observation. Among this significant collection, 120,000 cigarette butts were counted.
