Yesterday, at 10 a.m., the City of Nice commemorated the Centenary of the 1914-1918 war. In homage to the soldiers from Nice who went to the front, the City of Nice organized a parade and set up a military camp on the forecourt of the SNCF Thiers train station.
From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., the residents of Nice were able to attend the commemoration of the entry into the war of the soldiers from Nice. A program that retraces the path of the soldiers, 100 years ago, and pays tribute to them.
At the declaration of war, the mobilized soldiers converged towards the city and were housed in various requisitioned buildings (schools, casinos, etc.). Then, one after the other, the troops departed for the front, marching up the avenue Jean Médecin to board the train at the Paris-Lyon-Marseille station, amid the applause of passers-by and cries of “Long live the Army! Long live France!”.
The program included the departure of the parade from the Place du Palais de Justice at 11:30 a.m., heading towards Gare Thiers via Place Masséna and avenue Jean Médecin. A symbolic route, retracing the journey of the soldiers from Nice in 1914. The procession consisted of 15 Alpine Chasseurs and two horses, accompanied by the firefighters’ brass band. Arriving at the camp at Gare Thiers at noon, the procession paraded down the road, up to the height of the forecourt of Thiers station.
The commemorative ceremony began at 7 p.m., at the Place du Palais de Justice. Three cannon shots were fired at the location of the 14-18 war commemorative plaque. The Member of Parliament and Mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, laid a wreath in the presence of François Rabut, President of the Mission for the commemoration of the Centenary of the First World War.
