centenaire_14_18-13.jpg The theme is “Being a Foreigner in Nice during the First World War” by Yvan Gastaut, historian and senior lecturer at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis.

This conference will discuss how the First World War transformed the situation of foreign populations living in Nice.

Whether they were wealthy winter residents who stayed in Nice during the conflict or continued to spend a less carefree vacation than before, or immigrant workers employed in tough jobs, foreigners experienced the war as a trial.

The specific case of Germans present in Nice will be addressed. It will also study the reaction of the people of Nice to these presences, between hostility and goodwill.
