For the first time, the Lyonnaise des Eaux Grand Prix is stopping in Nice during the Nice Côte d’Azur triathlon, this Sunday, April 24, 2011. It is organized by the French Triathlon Federation with the support of the Côte d’Azur League and the Nice Triathlon Club.

After organizing the Nice long-distance Triathlon for 10 years (1994-2004), the Federation returns to Nice with this event counting towards the French First Division Club Championship. It is also the 1st stage of 2011 in a federal circuit that includes 4 others: Dunkerque, Paris, Tours, and La Baule.

Differing from the Iron Man (long-distance triathlon), the event is a short-distance triathlon in half-Olympic format, known as SPRINT:
750m of swimming,
20 km cycling,
5 km running.

Four races are organized:
2 Elite races (female then male),
1 “Grand Public Open” race,
1 children’s race.

Nearly 500 participants are expected, including 16 first division men’s clubs and 12 first division women’s clubs.

The best French triathletes competing for the London Olympic Games will be assembled, as well as the best in the world: Javier GOMEZ (2010 world champion), Alistair BROWNLEE (2009 world champion), Emma MOFFAT (2010 world champion), and Andrea HEWITT (world number 6).

Some of Yves CORDIER’s licensed athletes and he himself will take part in the OPEN race, which plans for 300 competitors. A strong team of young athletes will try to excel in the “Avenir” events scheduled in the form of a Duathlon.

This triathlon also aims to be supportive, as around a hundred families, supported by an association helping the underprivileged (Secours populaire), are invited to attend the event.

The program

8 am: Start of the “Grand Public Open” race at Centenaire Beach,
10 am: Start of Elite women,
11 am – 11:05 am: Arrival of Elite women,
11:15 am: “Avenir” Duathlons,
12:15 pm: Start of Elite men,
1:10 pm – 1:15 pm: Arrival of Elite men,
1:30 pm: Podiums.

Nice has maintained a long-standing tradition of Triathlon, to the point of becoming its capital in France.

There are three clubs in Nice: the Nice Triathlon Club, the ONN (with Johanna DAUMAS, French champion and 3rd in the long-distance triathlon world championship), and the Cavigal Nice Triathlon.
