Xavier Garcia, the young new departmental secretary called to get the train back on track after years of scarcity (not easy, but his goodwill is evident), presented the third installment of the electoral agreements for the departmental elections that the socialists have formed with the leftist “galaxy.”
After the MRC of Ladislas Polski and the PRG of Jean-Christophe Picard, it’s the turn of the green-ecologists (EE-LV) to join the ranks to tackle the concrete threat of the disappearance of leftist representatives within the departmental council.
Already the incumbent socialist and communist members are few and so dispersed that the risk of leaving the field open to duels between UMP and Front candidates is very high.
The prospect is hardly encouraging, and thus the agreements will allow for the presentation of “united left” lists.
Only the Left Front does not participate in this “republican alliance” and is going its own way in a national anti-system approach faithfully echoed at the local level: enlightened tactical choice or suicidal technique?
But, while with the other groups, the socialists negotiated classic agreements (common lists and candidacies), with the ecologists, it’s never simple.
First, due to a decentralized structure where local groups have the final say, then because of their pronounced spirit of contradiction, and finally, because, when you want to stand out, you always have to do things differently from others.
And here, let’s admit it, the Greens are just unbeatable!
Xavier Garcia, for his part, shows diplomacy (this new role has given him the style of a secular monsignor), before highlighting the positive aspect of the understanding: “We have set aside our differences to prioritize the common interest. The battle will be tough, and we cannot weaken our forces because of our egos.”
But, as the devil is in the details… let’s follow the outline of the agreement:
Option A: in the 9/Contes and 17/Nice 4 cantons, the Greens will go alone
Option B: in the 12/Cannet-Mougins and 13/Menton cantons, the Greens will not support the socialist candidate
Option C: in the 6/Cagnes 2, 22/Nice 9, and 24/Valbonne cantons, there will be mixed tickets
Option D: in the other cantons, the socialist candidates will have the support of EE-LV
Option E: in the 25/Vence canton, EE-LV will go with the FdG (!)
It’s a bit of an à la carte menu, but the socialist leaders (in addition to Xavier Garcia and Paul Cuturello) and ecologists (co-departmental secretaries Alain Ginouvier and Jeanne Thémonge) seem to find their way through it and are even pleased.
Let’s hope it’s the same for the voters!
