This Friday, July 23, the Olympic flame was ignited in Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium, marking the start of the 2020 Olympic Games. The delegations then followed one another, with the French team led by flag bearer Samir Ait Said. The gymnast, who suffered a horrific injury in 2017, might well bring a medal back to his home in Antibes.
This could be one of the beautiful stories of these games. Antibes-native Samir Ait Said, the flag bearer for the French delegation, qualified for the rings final after a very impressive performance that earned him third place in the ranking (the top eight are finalists). The 31-year-old athlete is off to a great start at these first Olympic Games after missing those in London and Rio due to injury. He will compete in his final on August 2 at 10 a.m., representing the only hope for a French medal in men’s gymnastics. There is only one thing left to wish him: to succeed in his final as much as he did with the salto he performed during the opening ceremony.
