On the night from Sunday to Monday, a new French medal was won at the Beijing Olympic Games.
It was the duo Gabriella Papadakis (26 years old) and Guillaume Cizeron (27 years old) who clinched the gold decisively in ice dance free.
Already four-time world champions (2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019) and five-time European champions (2015-2019), they finally win the Olympic title, while also breaking the world record (90.83 points compared to 90.03 at the end of 2019).
With this gold medal, the French erase their bad memory from the last Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang (South Korea). Four years ago, the duo experienced a misadventure when, after 20 seconds of choreography, the top of Papadakis’ dress came undone, thus canceling their Olympic dream.
This Olympic triumph places Papadakis and Cizeron in the history of French skating. Only the duos Andrée/Pierre Brunet in 1928 and 1932 and Marina Anissina/Gwendal Peizerat in 2002 had managed to win this title.
