The first debate of the five candidates for the presidential nomination of the Les Républicains party will take place tonight, Monday, November 8. Here’s what you need to know.
After the sponsorship race, it’s time for debates for the five candidates seeking the Les Républicains nomination.
This evening, Monday, November 8, will mark the first of four televised debates before the first round of the party congress. The five candidates – Eric Ciotti, Valérie Pécresse, Xavier Bertrand, Michel Barnier, and Philippe Juvin – will meet together for the first time on the television set of LCI, in partnership with RTL and Le Figaro. This will be an opportunity for them to present their programs to convince party members who will make their choice from December 1st to 4th during the party’s Congress.
Where and when should you watch it? What topics will be covered? Here is everything you need to know for this first Les Républicains debate.
At what time and on which channel will the debate take place?
The first debate will start at 8:45 PM and will be broadcast on the LCI channel. The program is expected to last two hours and will be hosted by TF1 group journalists David Pujadas and Ruth Elkrief.
How will the debate be organized?
During these two hours of debate, the five candidates will present their programs one after the other, with a minimum and equal speaking time. The order of speaking has been determined by drawing lots. Thus, Eric Ciotti will start, followed by Philippe Juvin, then Michel Barnier, Valérie Pécresse, and finally, Xavier Bertrand will conclude the debate.
What themes will be addressed?
Since the debate only lasts two hours, and the candidates have limited speaking time, not all topics can be covered. Therefore, four topics will be discussed: purchasing power, immigration, security, and international affairs. Each theme will be addressed for twenty minutes, giving each candidate four minutes to express their views on these topics.
When will the next debates take place?
Tonight’s debate is the first before the party congress, which will decide between the candidates on December 4th, with three more debates occurring in the meantime.
The second debate will take place on Sunday, November 14, on BFMTV/RMC at 8:45 PM, the third will be on Sunday, November 21, on CNews/Europe 1 at 9:05 PM. Finally, the fourth debate will be held on Tuesday, November 30, on France 2/France Inter at 9:05 PM.
