2024 Olympics: Paris can start its race for designation

Latest News

The IOC announced yesterday the five cities officially bidding to host the 2024 Olympics: Budapest, Hamburg*, Rome, L.A., and Paris°.

Four European cities, one North American. “Five highly qualified candidates,” said Thomas Bach, IOC President, noting that the committee would contribute $1.7 billion (1.5 billion euros) to the 2024 Olympic organizing committee.

Toronto and Baku, which had shown interest, ultimately decided not to enter the two-year race where Los Angeles and Paris are among the favorites.

The first Games awarded entirely according to the Agenda 2020 recommendations, the 2024 Olympics are part of a significantly revamped selection process.

Transparency, first and foremost. For the first time in history, the entire bidding process is made public. For example, the 7,000 pages of technical manuals sent to the candidates have been reduced to just 350 pages.

Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the five cities currently bidding will be present at the final vote in September 2017 in Peru.
