Thursday, June 9, 2011, food and nutrition professionals at the hospital will wear a recognition badge on their coat to signify the daily action of the CLAN (Food and Nutrition Liaison Committee) of the CHU of Nice.
Satisfying patients and staff by constantly improving services, adhering to food safety rules according to referenced methods, developing quality and diversity while respecting tastes and recommended nutritional intake, and managing budgets is the CLAN’s program.
Weight loss often occurs during illness or with aging. It is often thought that nothing can be done, that it is normal… a sort of inevitability. Yet, in many situations, it can be avoided or even corrected by regularly monitoring weight and taking action at the first signs of loss of appetite.
*Preserving quality of life and avoiding complications*
It is worth it because maintaining good nutritional status allows for better response to treatments, preserving quality of life (autonomy, morale…), and avoiding complications (infections, delayed healing, bedsores,…). The person themselves and their surroundings must be informed to be vigilant about food (quantities, varieties).
*Food is a care in its own right*
There are simple means to act: have several meals (even small ones) throughout the day, add powdered milk, fats, grated cheese to enrich preparations. There are also specialties in the form of drinks, creams, or powders.
Everything consumed must be nourishing (good nutritional density). Listening to the person is essential to know their desires and tastes, adapting the texture of foods to current capabilities, encouraging and supporting them.
