31st National Congress of the LGBT Federation: Nice, a Gay-Friendly City

Latest News

The 31st national congress of the LGBT Federation was an opportunity to review the Nice municipality’s policy in this area. It was Mathy Diouf, Deputy Mayor of Nice, who took on this task in her welcome speech.

“We are in Nice, fully committed to the fight against discrimination and victimization, for the right to be different and for better living together,” the elected official reminded the delegates and participants.

She emphasized, “We are proud to work in full confidence with LGBT associations, primarily with the LGBT Cรดte dโ€™Azur Center* – the first and only LGBT Center in the PACA region – with Henri Deschaux Beaume, the president, and his entire team. Our city was even ranked the 5th most ‘gay-friendly’ city in France by Tรชtu magazine in 2014.”

In fact, Nice was among the first cities in the department to establish the celebration of civil unions at the town hall and was the first city in France, after Paris, to witness the most same-sex couple marriages. Since the promulgation of the Taubira law in May 2013, 197 marriages of gay or lesbian couples have been celebrated in Nice.

Additionally, the Nice Convention and Visitors Bureau holds the “Nice Naturally Iridescent” label, which guarantees the quality of hospitality for LGBT tourists in more than 80 establishments in Nice.

Among other initiatives to note: The organization of LGBT film festivals by Les Ouvreurs and the Polychromes association, with films shown in the major theaters in Nice, attracting an increasingly large audience each year and achieving great success.

Finally, a new addition starting this year: Nice will host France’s first gay carnival on February 27. Lou Queernaval is part of the official program of the popular and internationally renowned Nice Carnival 2015. It’s a way to show that celebration and sharing can bring people together and transcend all differences in the capital of the Cรดte d’Azur.
