5th canton of Nice: a departmental election to watch closely

Latest News

This district will be one of the most contested because it is within its territory that one of the most important operations of the coming years will take place: the renovation of the Ray.
An operation that everyone is anticipating both with hope and concern: the hope of having a green lung and the concern of a new real estate operation.

For all the candidates of Nice-5 for the Departmental Council, next Sunday’s vote is akin to a real political test.

On the Left, the outgoing couple Patrick and Dominique Mottard will have to confirm the result of the last district elections, which had placed the elected official in the lead in the first round. A challenge that promises to be complicated given the clear unpopularity of the socialist government and the division of the forces of the Socialist Party and the Left Front, which also presents a pair in this district.

Within the ranks of the municipal majority, the mayorโ€™s candidates (Franck Martin and Catherine Moreau, UDI) have a lot at stake.

Their score will first impact the scope of Christian Estrosi’s future projects in a district where the opportunities for planning and development are real, especially with the land made available at the Ray stadium site.

But above all, while the political trend of the people of Nice leans clearly to the right, as evidenced by the National Front’s score in Nice during the European elections, the centrist alliance strategy of Rudy Salles could also backfire on Christian Estrosi, as it seems out of sync with reality. If they do not qualify for the second round, the mayor’s candidates will bear the responsibility for a political shake-up at the local level that could reshuffle the cards.

As for the National Front, scrutinized closely since the wave of the European elections, we can wonder if the score of the Chantal Agnรฉly-Marc Gรฉrios pair will live up to the national momentum or if, on the contrary, the locally chosen candidates will be an obstacle to this progress.

Finally, the score of the diverse-right candidates Olga Albin-Gaรซl Nofri can be analyzed in light of the Identitarians’ score in the first round of the last municipal elections (4.4%). A fierce opponent of this alliance, the score of the former FN leader will reveal the electoral impact, the absence of effect, or the political damage of the FN-Identitaires alliance.

On the left and the right, and despite the significant proportion of announced abstentions, the stakes are high: an outgoing general councillor under pressure from the growing rejection of Francois Hollandeโ€™s politics by the French, a far-left aiming to capitalize on this unpopularity to rally the disenchanted from the Left in power, a municipal majority obliged to achieve a grand slam, a UDI demanding its share of the pie, a FN riding high nationally, and a right-wing outsider determined to make his mark…
