Belonging to the Province of Cuneo (Italy) following the Convention of March 4, 1861, which defined the borders of the Upper County of Nice (after the Treaty of Turin in 1860 through which Nice was annexed to France), the two communes of Tende and La Brigue remained part of Italy until after the Second World War.
On February 10, 1947, during the Treaty of Paris between the Allies and the Axis powers, defeated Italy had to not only revert to its pre-war borders but also symbolically cede part of its territory. It thus renounced, among others, the communes of Tende and La Brigue. The annexation became official on September 16, 1947.
