For this creation, “Les Ballets des Alpes-Maritimes” are showcasing one of the important points of their charter: artistic exchanges. While adhering to the essential aspects of their main goal, which is the creation of jobs for young, graduated dancers, the 2007/2008 creation season will allow them to develop this new point significantly through its originality and multi-disciplinary artistic research.
“Rimbaud – To me, the story of one of my follies,” inspired by one of Arthur Rimbaudโs major works “A Season in Hell,” will stage 3 of the main disciplines of the performing arts:
– dance
– theatre
– music
Indeed, the neoclassical choreographer and artistic director Julia Tumorticchi will innovate once again by collaborating with a theatre man, Alain Illel, in creating and staging a choreographic narrative around the text of the author Arthur Rimbaud and to the music of contemporary composers including Philip Glass.
More than just dance, the young graduated dancers from Ballets des Alpes-Maritimes, will be an integral part of the text in an allegorical evocation of the poet’s trajectory, from his happy childhood to the day he is targeted by his companion Verlaine.
This choreographic narrative will see dancers become actors in the life of Arthur Rimbaud, exploring through 22 scenes timeless and powerful themes such as madness and reason, temptations, and inner freedom.
Alain Illel, a leading prize winner of the conservatory of dramatic arts, former director of the Rush actorโs school with Georges Lautner and Claude Jean-Philippe, creator and director of the Thรฉรขtre de la Main d’Or in Paris, is also a producer, adapter, and director. His artistic collaboration with “Les Ballets des Alpes-Maritimes” will give the show its full dramatic dimension around the eternally contemporary text of Rimbaud.
Philip Glass (born in Baltimore, 1937) has developed a composition technique based on additive progression and has established himself as one of the leaders of repetitive minimalist music.
Considered one of the most talented composers of his generation, his works have traveled the world and quickly positioned him in the upper echelons of contemporary music.
The neoclassical choreography of Julia Tumorticchi (including student of Janine Monin and Rosella Hightower) will be the metaphorical transfiguration using Rimbaud’s prose in his inner battle as a rhythmic vector, where the melodic curves, enchanting and intoxicating, have a very important narrative role.
The light designer Yann Le meignen (also a light creator for the Systรจme Castafiore company) will dress the creation “Rimbaud – To me, the story of one of my follies” in dreamy luminous sets that enhance the dramatic intensity of the show offered by “Les Ballets des Alpes-Maritimes.”
The Theatre with Alain Illel on a text by Arthur Rimbaud, the Dance with the neoclassical choreography of Julia Tumorticchi, and the Music with the contemporary compositions of Philip Glass will therefore be the 3 major axes of this new creation of the Ballets des Alpes-Maritimes.
