The public might feel that this Lyon native is a television personality doing comedy, seeing him on TMC every Saturday at 7:30 PM since the end of summer, as the co-host with Sandra Lou of the show “Incroyable mais vrai, le mag”, on France 3, also on Saturdays, but between 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM in “Les Grands du Rire” hosted by Yves Lecoq, and in other shows like “Florence Foresti et ses friends.”
In fact, he’s a comedian who does television while presenting his second “one-man show,” which he simply named “Denis Maréchal passe la seconde,” the first being called “J’dis franchement” and presented in 2006. For the first one, he didn’t have a director, and it was during this tour that he found one for the second in the person of Bruno Solo. Solo was impressed by Maréchal’s humor and performance, but the collaboration was only decided later. It has been fifteen years since Denis ventured into comedy—at the age of 24—by enrolling in the renowned Cours Florent. Working as a waiter to make a living, it was during this period that he met Philippe Sohier, director of a theater workshop at the time, where he eventually went to write his first sketches.
Since then, he has tried duos with Bertrand Fournel, performed with the troupe Carré Blanc directed by Philippe Richard, before going solo and winning the competition “Les Coups d’humour” on TF1 during his second final, the first being won by Maxime.
Thanks to a clever mix of “stand-up” and sketches with quintessential characters like Geoffroy the fan of joints, looking for his stash and avoiding getting “lost in the carpet,” or Fred the bad luck charm, the friend to avoid, and not forgetting the incredible encounter with Rute, the shot put athlete “superbly built and bushy” but terribly clingy, Denis Maréchal has found his niche, and the rapport with Bruno Solo shines on stage.
Final notes: it’s not necessary to have seen the first show to understand the second, although you will find some recurring characters. Denis Maréchal performs at Théâtre Ségurane for only three shows. Don’t miss them…
