This match represents a real test for the French team in several respects; firstly, they must confirm, in a very difficult context, the performance achieved against Ireland. Then, they must prove their consistency by stringing together good results, and finally, a victory in Cardiff would bring them closer to a possible Grand Slam.
Thus, there are many sources of motivation for our players, and even if certain conditions seem to be met—strong scrummaging, a well-organized defensive system, great discipline, and Bastareaud’s powerful penetration—it might be thought that they will not be sufficient to defeat the very skillful Welsh who are capable of offering a great variety in their play options.
The French will also need to be more effective in lineouts to deprive their opponents of the ball, rely on precise game launches, and be realistic with turnover ball, knowing that Shayne Williams’ teammates (watch out for him!!!) have weaknesses in defensive repositioning.
On Friday night, France must act and not react. They have the talent, and a victory would demonstrate a certain maturity that only great teams possess.
