“Lascaux in the 21st Century”
is the theme of the new exhibition proposed
by the Circle of Artists of Saint Paul de Vence
Why did they choose this title? :
Lascaux is the reference cave adorned with parietal (Paleolithic) art.
What is the significance of this art? :
The vast compositions painted or engraved in the caves, with symbols, signs, and forms, seem to be the testimonies of the spiritual thought of prehistoric humans. These paintings did not have a decorative role, and the caves in question were not dwelling places. Parietal art corresponded to forms of communication between tribes and/or traces of ritual or religious manifestations.
The exhibition “Lascaux in the 21st Century” proposes to express in a contemporary way the signs, communication rituals, symbols, and forms specific to our century… a parallel between parietal art and contemporary expressions.
“The prehistoric man represented his concerns and environment on the walls of the caves… what does the 21st-century artist represent of his own environment?”
