The People’s University of Parents (UPP) was established in France in 2005 at the initiative of the Association of Children-Parents-Professionals Collectives. There are currently fifteen People’s Universities of Parents in France, four in Germany, and four in Belgium.
The aim is to allow parents, with the support of academics, to conduct research related to parenting: school dropout, the transmission of values to children, educational coherence, etc.
This work promotes local debates between parents, elected officials, and professionals, generating projects and proposals to strengthen cooperation between parents and educators and improve children’s lives.
The People’s University of Parents (UPP) of Nice, established on September 29, 2009, is supported by the Nice Communal Center for Social Action (CCAS). It is co-financed by the CCAS, the Departmental Directorate of Social Cohesion, and the Family Allowance Fund. It currently gathers eight parents actively invested in the project at the Village, House of Solidarity and Sharing.
These parents address the following themes: “schooling,” “authority,” “children, parents, grandparents, how to live together?”, “identity and culture,” “prejudices, difference,” “recognition and non-recognition,” “the transmission of values.”
The UPP of Nice invites all interested parents to a Forum Theatre performance to witness role-playing situations, followed by a debate led by Béatrice Vitali from the Entr’Act Company.
