There are neighborhoods and streets where it is a veritable institution; thus, from Bonaparte Street to Trachel Street, passing through the Madeleine, double parking is commonplace in Nice. However, it is uncertain whether this will continue with video fines now extended to many problem areas of the city.
Since November 1, 2010, three identified sites (Carlone, Verdun, Gambetta South) known for frequent traffic jams have been using the video-verbalization system. Having proven highly effective, especially in terms of traffic flow, the Mayor extends this system from today to seven new sites: Gambetta North, Marceau, Trachel, Madeleine, Chateauneuf/Grosso, Dante, and Californie/Bosquets.
Although for some time the video-verbalization cameras served a “preventive” purpose, a €35 fine will now be imposed on motorists who continue using this very local parking method. “Here, cars are double-parked all day long, and I even see some parking at night to go have dinner or even return home. The problem is that due to the narrowness of the street, trucks can’t get through, leading to a symphony of horns!” says Patrick, a Bonaparte Street resident who grew up with this. “Even back when there weren’t so many vehicles, people would still double-park to do their shopping at the Halles or grab a portion of socca.”
Whether you are on Gambetta, Trachel, the Madeleine, Grosso, or the Californie, you will now have to pay close attention to the little smoked glass globes that have, since yesterday, been capturing illegal stops. They record the vehicle’s license plate as well as its time of arrival and departure. This is followed by the issuance of a ticket, its transmission to the Public Prosecutor’s Officer, and finally, its dispatch to the vehicle owner along with a letter detailing the incriminated facts.
