Exhibition from June 29, 2012, to March 31, 2013, at the Musรฉe dรฉpartemental des Merveilles in Tende.

Among others, two superb 16th-century galleys adorn the walls of the Vallรฉe des Merveilles, taking us back to this tumultuous period when Ottoman forces clashed with the Christian fleets of the Mediterranean.

Indeed, it was in 1543 that the maritime siege of Nice took place, and a few years later, in 1571, the famous Battle of Lepanto. This naval battle, which marked the history of naval military strategy, had a significant impact in Europe as it was the first time a Christian fleet succeeded in defeating the Ottoman fleet, the undisputed ruler of the Mediterranean until then.

This epic tale, whose striking echoes are found in the form of engravings, is presented to you at the Musรฉe des Merveilles in Tende. This journey back in time will help you understand the importance of naval strategy during the 16th century, when the balance of power between the Mediterranean countries was played out on the seas.

An indispensable complement to the permanent exhibition of the Musรฉe dรฉpartemental des Merveilles, this presentation sheds new light on the interpretation of the region’s Mount Bego naval rock engravings, allowing visitors to better understand these historical carvings.
