The General Council of the Alpes-Maritimes, the French Federation of Mountain Climbing, and the Departmental Committee 06 are offering a new competition in the snowy mountains of the department, the Ski Mountaineering Challenge 06.
Ski mountaineering is an ideal sport for nature lovers. Also called ski touring, this activity involves covering mountain or high-mountain routes with one or more ascents and descents, using skis equipped with a movable binding for the ascent (like in cross-country skiing) and locked for the descent (like in alpine skiing).
The races of the Ski Mountaineering Challenge 06 will primarily take the form of a “Vertical Race” or “Vertical Climb.” They will thus consist of covering a mountain route solely on the ascent.
Contested over 8 dates within the most beautiful landscapes of the department, the 1st edition of the Ski Mountaineering Challenge will take competitors to Valberg for the Regional Championship, to Borรฉon during the “รchappรฉe Blanche” weekend, to La Colmiane for the Departmental Championship, and also to Isola 2000 and Auron for a final nighttime event.
These races, which will reach the summit of Cheiron, the Piagu Ridge, and the Colmiane Peak, will cover distances ranging from 33 to 55 kilometers with elevation gains of around 5500 meters.
This spectacular new championship promises to truly enliven our ski resorts.
