At the invitation of the Mayor of Nice and in the presence of Prefect Adolphe Colrat, military authorities, numerous elected officials from Nice and the metropolis, as well as political party leaders, about a thousand residents of Nice gathered in the late afternoon at Garibaldi Square to express their mourning and deep emotion following yesterday’s attack on Charlie Hebdo.
In an emotional and silent atmosphere, Christian Estrosi briefly spoke to recount the events and call for national unity around the values of the Republic.
Prefect Colrat reminded that the State will confront the terrorist threat by first ensuring the safety of citizens while respecting individual liberties and the rule of law, values that form the foundation of the national community.
La Marseillaise, spontaneously sung by those present after a few minutes of reflection, concluded the ceremony.
