Gathering for the 440th Anniversary of the Battle of Lepanto

NISSA REBELA organized a gathering this Friday, October 7, to celebrate the 440th anniversary of this great victory of united Europe against conquering Islam.

On October 7, 1571, off the coast of Greece, 200 ships of the European coalition fleet—assembled at the call of Pope Pius V—of the Holy League faced 300 galleys of the Ottoman fleet.

The Christian victory in the Battle of Lepanto would resonate throughout Europe, marking a halt to Muslim expansionism, of which the Ottoman Turks were then the spearhead.

Three decades later, the Battle of Lepanto obviously echoes the siege of Nice, especially since a man from Nice—André Provana de Leyni—commanded the galleys sent by Savoy during this true clash of civilizations.
