R. CHEMLA (President of the Marine World Discovery Center) will be speaking on Friday, December 2nd at 6:30 PM at the Environmental House during a conference entitled:
Why is it necessary to protect biodiversity?
This question is not as obvious as it seems. We feel deeply within ourselves that it seems important to protect the diversity of life, of which we are the true evidence of this necessity.
From all sides, writings, articles, and conferences bombard us with the message to not harm this biodiversity, which is a guarantee of our life, or even our survival!
But at a time when species are disappearing like never before, when everywhere this biodiversity is being undermined, and when entire lines of fauna and flora are being lost, we have never been in better “health”!
It is now that human life expectancy is the longest, it is nowadays that diseases are receding the most, and it is during this century that infant mortality is the lowest!
What a paradox, so why protect this biodiversity at all costs? By the way, what is biodiversity? What is the usefulness of thriving biodiversity?
These are some of the questions that will serve as the framework for this conference, perhaps concluding with Jean Rostandโs quoteโฆ “We must protect the unknown for unknown reasons.”
