The National Centennial Committee has recognized 6 projects by the General Council of Alpes-Maritimes and the Genealogical Association of Alpes-Maritimes (AGAM).
Six of the events proposed as part of the World War I centenary commemorations, implemented by the General Council of Alpes-Maritimes in partnership with AGAM, have been recognized by the National Centennial Committee.
All these commemorative projects will help reveal to the public the human side of the Great War.
The recognized projects
The places of remembrance of the Great War in Alpes-Maritimes / CG06
An exceptional volume of the series “Passeurs de Mรฉmoire” will be dedicated to the heritage of the Alpes-Maritimes related to the 1914-1918 war. Thoroughly documented, it will discuss war memorials as well as numerous topographical memory sitesโstreets and squares in our communities bearing the names of soldiers or famous battlesโand finally, the auxiliary hospitals.
The war memorials of the Great War in Alpes-Maritimes / CG06
A work on the memory sites of the war is being created by the Departmental Archives. It will focus particularly on the war memorials installed in our territory, featuring their history, description, and both recent and period photographs overlaid.
By encountering these monuments, the flame of remembrance will be rekindled once more, illustrating the full extent of the sacrifice made by our forebears.
1st National Genealogical Meeting on the Great War / CG06 & AGAM
This event, the first of its kind in France, took place last April 11, 12, and 13 at the Palace of the Sardinian Kings. This gathering allowed nearly a thousand people eager to trace the journey of their ancestors who went to war for their country to obtain valuable information on their forebears’ military past and to engage in dialogue with specialists.
Creation of a database and iconographic record / AGAM – Project Bleuets 1914-2014
The Bleuets Project aims to create a record and documentary database on the men and women who originated from, resided in, or died in the Alpes-Maritimes and participated in World War I.
Days of animation and research on our Poilu ancestors / AGAM – Project Bleuets 1914-2014
A team of volunteer animators from AGAM, trained in research methods, travels throughout the year to the department’s communities to inform and assist people wishing to know the journey of their Poilu ancestors. Traveling exhibition “The Alpine Hunters in the Niรงois Region” / AGAM – Project Bleuets 1914-2014
This exhibition traces the journey of this elite corps, from their creation to their involvement in the first world conflict that would make them forever known as “The Blue Devils.” It is based on the iconographic collection constituted from donations collected and digitized by the Bleuets project team.
Upcoming dates: June 23 to 30, 2014, at the Villefranche-sur-Mer citadel, July 26 to August 17 at Saint-Etienne-de-Tinรฉe, and from September 1 to 30 at the Salle Laure Ecard in Nice.
Other projects will be presented to the National Centennial Committee:
“The Festival of Storytelling and Words,” which will take place from July 12 to August 2, 2014, will dedicate its last evening, the day of the 100th anniversary of mobilization, to the Great War.
“The great emotions that gripped men during the Great War,” this festival will take place from November 5 to 11, 2014, at the Mercury Cinema in Nice.
“The Great War: Words and Writings”: this symposium will be organized on November 15, 2014.
