The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Nice has chosen to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Maeght Foundation by paying tribute to Alexander Calder.
Until September 7th, the contemporary gallery of the museum will present a collection from the Maeght Foundation, bringing together mobiles, stabiles, sculptures, engravings, and original lithographs, centered around the masterpiece of MAMAC, the Stabile-Mobile (1970).
Alexander Calder recounts in his Autobiography his meeting with Aimรฉ Maeght: “Christian Zervos, who published Cahiers dโArt, had very kindly put me in touch with Aimรฉ Maeght, who had a very good gallery in the 8th arrondissement. I brought many Roxbury mobiles to Maeght and had an exhibition with him in June 1950, following a Mirรณ exhibition. This marked the beginning of a long association with Aimรฉ.”
Alexander Calder created for the gardens of the Maeght Foundation an immense stabile, Les Renforts, and invested a lot for his first major retrospective in 1969.
Fรชtes, a bibliophile book published by Maeght Editeur and co-signed by Calder and Prรฉvert, testifies to the friendship that united these two great artists.
