SRU Law: The government cracks down on non-compliant towns like Contes, Le Cannet, and Pégomas.

Latest News

The government has published a list of 36 municipalities that do not comply with the SRU law on social housing. The PACA region tops this national ranking, with 17 non-compliant municipalities. Among them are Contes, Le Cannet, and Pégomas.

What is surprising is the presence of the municipality of Contes, which has long been governed by the left, and whose mayor is Francis Tujague (a member of the Communist Party).

How can we explain this inconsistency between words and actions? Furthermore, the percentage of social housing is 4.84% of the housing stock.

In fact, we are really far from the target.

Nice is also in the red zone with nearly 12% social housing, but it was not mentioned.

In these municipalities, coercive measures could be applied such as the issuance of building permits by the prefect instead of the mayor or the purchase of old housing through preemption to convert them into social housing.

This provides an opportunity for “candidate” Christian Estrosi (and Renaud Muselier, head of the list in Bouches-du-Rhône) to protest against this government announcement:

“State subsidies for construction have dropped from 800 million euros in 2008 to less than 500 million euros today. The government is no stranger to paradox: on one hand, it criticizes overdevelopment, which is said to be the cause of flooding during heavy rains, and on the other hand, it encourages intensive construction.

By brandishing the threat of coercion, the government violates the principle of free administration of local authorities. We therefore call for consultation rather than showing contempt for local elected officials.”
