The Nice Photo Marathon prize to Sylvain Bineau for “Himalaya Children”

In celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Marathon Photos, Uni-vers-photos is hosting Sylvain Bineau, the winner of the 2015 NICE PHOTO MARATHON, until November 21.

The prize awarded to this talented photographer consists of organizing his first exhibition with full freedom and creativity in a photo gallery and encouraging the visibility of a personal and intimate work.

The exhibition will be accompanied by an original installation through a retrospective of the ten years of the photo marathon…

The eleven photographs of the exhibition were taken during a trek carried out in 2014 around Manaslu, which peaks at over 8000 meters, a bit west of Annapurna.

Fifteen days of walking, between 800m and 5200m in altitude, through picturesque villages and other Tibetan monasteries. While the southern part of the Himalayas is under Nepalese influence, the northern part is clearly under Tibetan influence (which is a region of China).

The trek takes place entirely in Nepal but everything, from the language to the faces and the famous chรถrten, reminds one of Tibet. Buddhism is very present there, yaks replace cows, and Tibetan predominates over Nepalese.

There are no roads. Thus, one goes from one village to another by walking, and it’s not uncommon to encounter children, simply dressed, who go to visit an uncle or aunt (two or three days’ walk away) or return just from school… which is three hours’ walk away! These children are smiling, often speak several languages, and readily share Dal-Bhat, a traditional dish made of rice and lentils.
Nothing seems to be lacking for them, smiles are abundant, and their kindness is boundless.
