On the occasion of the 2020 New Year greetings, the first for the new Rector who arrived on the Cรดte d’Azur in 2019, Richard Laganier invited a few journalists to discuss future projects and reforms already implemented within the Nice academy.
Ambition 2024, the new academic project.
Ambition 2024 structures the strategy for the next four years. A result of collaboration between teachers, administrative staff, elected officials, and parent associations, its major focus is the studentโs journey towards success.
Four main axes have been chosen for these coming years: civic engagement, the student’s journey towards building their future and success, territorial equity with a focus on social justice, and finally the professional development of all staff.
This new project has just been presented to the parent associations and the management staff. It will then be disseminated throughout the academy.
Ongoing changes
Richard Laganier also emphasized the objectives of the baccalaureate reform.
High school students will need to spread out their efforts to be more effective in terms of learning. “It must become a routine exercise,” said the senior official. Continuous assessment is not meant to stress the students, but rather to stop “cramming.” No more relying on a few days to earn the diploma.
Another change? Students will be able to learn from their mistakes as their test papers will be returned to them. Moreover, the conditions will be the same as for a regular in-class assignment; there won’t be exam conditions for continuous assessment. The rector assures, “thereโs no need to feel pressured.”
A national subject bank was opened in December. Continuously updated, it aims to be visible to everyone. Teachers have several weeks to choose a subject.
According to academy statistics, over 51% of students have chosen subjects and options unrelated to the three former classic streams. “Itโs a way to provide freedom in choices.”
“A student who flourishes is more likely to succeed” – that’s the conclusion.
The Rector’s word!
