Fifth-grade students and mixed grade classes (fourth and fifth grade) from public schools in the City of Nice worked from September to December 2019 on the theme: “Simone Veil, symbol of the women’s rights struggle.” During this early part of the school year, ten classes were able to study the life and work of Simone Veil and her contribution to the advancement of women’s rights and their emancipation.
Simone Veil was born in Nice in 1927. She was deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau at the age of sixteen with her family. Her father and brother were murdered upon arrival. She survived the camp and the death march. She later became Minister of Health and was responsible for the law on voluntary termination of pregnancy. She was also the first president of the European Parliament.
She is now buried at the Pantheon with her husband Antoine Veil.
The runners-up in the competition are Ms. Bazin’s class at the Simone Veil-Baumette school. They won, just like the third-place finishers, a visit to the Oceanographic Museum and the Prince’s Palace of Monaco as well as the book “History of Nice and its County.”
The winners are students from the Saint-Roch school. They unanimously impressed the jury with a video detailing the life of Simone Veil and a representation of the academic sword. They won a trip to Paris that will take the children on the footsteps of Simone Veil, and all the students will also receive the book “History of Nice and its County.”
