The International Summer Academy of Classical Music dates back to 1957, and it was then the first event of its kind created in France. Since then, it has evolved over sixty years, strengthening year by year. Since last year, the Nice Classic Live has adopted the concept of the concerts at the Cimiez cloister.
For this second edition, the year 2019 offers us several opportunities; the 150th anniversary of the death of Berlioz; the 200th anniversary of the birth of Clara Schumann, wife of Robert Schumann; the 300th anniversary of the birth of Leopold Mozart, we already have an idea of the programming.
The program adheres to the idea of lineage between composers, those of yesterday, those of the day before yesterday, and those of today. There is a link, certainly invisible, perhaps even intangible, between composers as different as Debussy, Messiaen; Brahms, and Bach. Moreover, this invisible thread will be one of the highlights of this 2019 Nice Classic Live.
If one reads the title carefully, one can guess the program: Live, thus living. With Michel Vuillermoz, words become music or the music of words! Then the stage must be opened to the talents of tomorrow, with the “Tremplin” evening featuring young promising musicians from around the world to express themselves on stage in front of the public.
The stage: The cloister of the Cimiez Monastery where in the silence of the night the music will rise as a prayer, a song where the sacred mingles with the profane, and that’s the magic of these concerts which for over 60 years have been one of the summer night rendezvous where one loves to linger in the coolness of the evening. Other events, morning sessions, will be organized in venues whose spirit is conducive to music, such as the Matisse Museum or the Lascaris Palace.
The Nice Classic Live will take place from July 15 to August 9, this year stretching over three weeks to reach a larger audience. To conclude, we will quote Marie Josèphe Jude, the artistic director: “Artistic direction is like cooking, we have the ingredients, we must harmonize the menu.” We can assert that the menu will be delicious.
