A meeting was held between charitable organizations, medium and large retail stores, and Christian Estrosi to work against food waste.
The goal? To discuss the collection and distribution of unused food. The attendees aimed to talk about the importance of stronger collaboration and better coordination in this domain to better serve the beneficiaries in need from the charitable organizations.
Following the discussions, Christian Estrosi announced several measures including:
• The implementation of a commitment charter for enhanced coordination and proximity among the various stakeholders
• The creation of a solidarity matchmaking web page to facilitate the continuous optimization of supply and demand and the creation of a single contact number
• A stronger fight against food waste, particularly through the recovery of products in school cafeterias with very short Shelf Life Dates (packaged, bulk, individual). Conventions already exist between the MIR association, Secours Populaire, and the central kitchen of the City of Nice, as well as between the CFA of the Nice Côte d’Azur Metropolis and Restos du Cœur
• Better utilization of unsold but edible items from the MIN and the creation of a social cannery
• The opening of new premises (155m²) for Restos du Cœur in November 2019 at 149 Bd de l’Ariane (former marble factory that recently closed. The premises, larger and more suitable (155m²), will be renovated by the City of Nice (€97,000) and partially funded by Restos du Cœur.
The signing of the charter is announced for June 2019.
