The ceremony of General De Gaulle’s appeal was celebrated at Liberation Square, at the foot of the commemorative statue of its author, in the presence of civil authorities, military personnel, elected officials, and veterans’ associations.
A date that is now inscribed in the history of France. At a time when some would like to appropriate it for political reasons, we must remain vigilant and defend the true values of patriotism from false interpretations and low political maneuvers.
In this regard, we can cite a statement from Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice: “The appeal of June 18 still speaks to our hearts and minds as French people today, subtle and magnificent between passion and reason, between foresight and hope, this is what leads us to recognize ourselves in these words even in 2020. Our times respond to it.”
