Bac 2020: the success rate before retakes is at a “record” level of 91.5%, announces the Ministry of Education
To ensure that no student is penalized by the closure of all schools in mid-March and the absence of a final exam, the ministry called for a “spirit of benevolence.”
The ministerial recommendations were applied to the letter for the 740,000 candidates who did not have to take a test to validate their diploma: only the grades from the first and second trimesters counted for the awarding of the exam.
The harmonization juries, responsible for raising students’ grades if deemed necessary, considering the severity of their teachers’ grading throughout the year or their good academic record, seemed to have fully played their role.
The success rate for the bac before the retake exceeded last year’s by more than thirteen points. Unprecedented.
The success rate is “up by 13.7 points compared to June 2019,” writes the Ministry of National Education in its statement.
These figures largely confirm a trend that teachers and education professionals suspected for several days: the results of the “Covid bac,” as many students are already calling it, are expected to be exceptionally high.
According to some experts, this end-of-year exam is more formal than anything else. In fact, they say, teachers have all the elements to assess a student’s “maturity” by relying on their performance throughout the year and even considering previous years.
In a spirit of innovation, it will be necessary to consider whether this final step is truly useful or if it is more a matter of tradition than utility.
Bac graduates who achieve a “Very Good” distinction will receive a small monetary bonus:
The Regional Council will grant them 400 euros (for scholarship students, this bonus will be replicated for an additional 2 years, totaling 1200 euros).
The Departmental Council, which announced that there will be no traditional garden party at the departmental hotel garden, will be more economical with its bonus of 200 euros.
