They denounce the appointment of Gerald Darmanin and Eric Dupont Moretti as the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Justice, respectively. The former is accused of “rape,” while the latter is openly against feminists and the MeToo movement.
“The presumption of innocence that Darmanin demands is a presumption of lying for the victims.” These women and men have a demand: the resignation of Gerald Darmanin and Eric Dupont Moretti. This gathering, declared at the prefecture, brought together more than 200 people. It is supported by the Antifascist Collective 06, the National High School Union 06, and Youth for Climate Nice.
Strong accusations against certain ministers
The message is clear, bordering on defamation. Yet, these feminists want to demonstrate the inconsistency of the government, which declared that gender equality is the great national cause.
The one who was still the Minister of Public Accounts a week ago has sparked passions. His promotion to Place Beauvau outrages feminists, who see it as contempt and an attack against them. For Mathilde Castanié, a 20-year-old history student and organizer of the event, the mayor of Tourcoing has no place in the government. “France’s top cop is accused of rape twice. He is associated with Marlène Schiappa, former delegate for gender equality. He is homophobic, against same-sex marriage and adoption. He is a refractory conservative, retrograde and reactionary.”
As for the former lawyer nicknamed “acquitator”, it is his conservative statements that are shocking. “These are anti-MeToo stances that are alarming for the contemporary judicial system, making it impossible to trust him as Minister of Justice. His belief in the normality of sexual harassment, the fact that he thinks it pleases us to be insulted, humiliated, assaulted, harassed, and whistled at, makes us angry about his appointment.”
A situation that almost escalated
During the young woman’s speech, some began to rush and boo a small group of people. Among them was Phillipe Vardon, RN municipal councilor, accompanied by his colleagues. Indeed, the protesters position themselves against the RN and the extreme right. The police present on-site had to intervene to prevent any overflow.
