In its annual report, the student union UNEF announced that studying in 2019/2020 will require spending 2.83% more than in 2018/2019.
As a result, according to the report: “in France, 90% of students must find a job either in the summer or throughout the year to fund their studies.”
In detail, housing costs are on the rise. In Nice, renting in the private sector will cost 590 euros this year compared to 587 euros in 2018/2019, representing an increase of 0.51%.
CROUS tariffs are also increasing. The national average was 359.07 euros in 2018/2019. It will be 364.81 for 2019/2020 (+1.60%).
For FACE 06 – the majority student union – the increase is 1.18% in the Alpes-Maritimes.
According to Face 06, this rise in the cost of student living is lower in the Alpes-Maritimes than in the rest of the country. The student union estimates that this increase is 1.18% in the department, matching the inflation rate which is 1.2%.
Restaurant expenses are also rising. In the Nice-Toulon academy, the price of cafeteria meals increases from 4.11 euros in 2018/2019 to 4.75 euros in 2019/2020, a rise of +15.60%. The cost of a meal at the university restaurant rises by 1.54%. This year, a meal will cost 3.30 euros compared to 3.25 euros last year.
As for enrollment fees, they are relatively stable throughout the metropolis. Only the registration fees for non-European students are on the rise*.
A moderate increase that Face 06 leaders attribute to the indexation on inflation of tuition fees or scholarships based on social criteria, “which has allowed maintaining an equal or superior purchasing power for students who are partially or fully exempted,” explains the union.
Another significant expense for students: housing. Again, prices remain stable. On average, housing in the Alpes-Maritimes costs 604.50 euros per month in 2019, compared to 603 euros in 2018.
As for the food budget, it is on the rise. In 2019, a basket consisting of 30 breakfasts and 40 meals amounts to 147.06 euros, compared to 143.76 euros in 2018, a rise of 2.30%.
In total, students will have to account for a spending of 1408.29 euros for back-to-school expenses and a monthly budget of 1060.41 euros.
