This morning in front of the War Memorial at Quai Rauba Capeu, civil and military authorities, surrounded by a large audience, paid tribute to the fighters and victims of the First World War.
It has been 101 years. On November 11, 1918, at 5:15 in the morning, the representatives of the Allies and the Germans, gathered in a train carriage in the forest of Compiègne, signed the Armistice.
This document ends the fighting of the First World War, which resulted in more than 18.6 million deaths, injuries, and mutilations. It marks the recognition of the Allies’ victory and Germany’s defeat.
In his speech, Prefect Gonzales, representing the State, read the official message from the Secretary of State for Veterans, reminding that this commemorative day retains its significance more than a century later.
