STAPS students are protesting for more spots in Master’s programs.

Today, third-year STAPS students came to protest in front of the rectorate with the goal of having more available spots in Master’s programs.

180 students for only 25 spots in Master’s programs, these are the reasons for the STAPS students’ protest. In front of the rectorate, there were about a hundred students, accompanied by a few teachers, demanding the creation of a new Master’s section to accommodate more people. The protest took place in a spirit of camaraderie, with music, dance, volleyball, and also signs with various demands.

This gathering was organized to “address an injustice” claims a student in the third year of education and motor skills Bachelor’s in Nice, “we are the only Academy in France with 180 students for 25 Masterโ€™s spots. Without it, we cannot access our training, and therefore the profession of PE teacher.” An injustice that mainly leads to misunderstanding. Indeed, the results cannot be questioned, the success rate of the competition to become a PE teacher (CAPEPS) is “40/45% in the academy, whereas nationally, it is 13%”.

So, tensions or internal competition could arise given the few available spots. Enzo Napoli, a student in the third year of education and motor skills, claims the opposite. “We all get along well; we are so united that there is no competition; we want to succeed together.”

A movement supported by teachers

Remi Barili, a training professor at STAPS in Nice, and also responsible for the MEEF EPS Master’s, came “to support our students”. He acknowledges the complexity of the situation this generation finds itself in “there is a bottleneck after three years of study, they cannot all complete their project.” Currently, there is only one Master’s class, which is in Nice. The problem is that there are two third-year classes, one in Toulon and the other in Nice. Beyond the insufficient number of spots to access the Master, Remi Barili considers the selection process inhuman, “we said no to students who have all the necessary skills, because there are no more spots. Itโ€™s humanly too unjust.”
