Returning to its original route this year, on the Promenade des Anglais, the Prom’Classic brought together 8,000 runners, both professional and amateur, for this first 10 km race of the year in France.
It witnessed the victory of Mohamed SERGHINI among the men (30’06) and Ophélie CLAUDE BOXBERGER among the women (33’28).
Under a cloudy sky, but in an atmosphere that quickly became festive, both participants and spectators, who showed up in numbers for this first sporting event of the year in Nice, gathered from 7 a.m. this Sunday.
For the first time since 2016, the race started on the Promenade des Anglais, right in front of Le Méridien.
No record for the men
Due to strong winds (especially in the last 5 km of the race) during this 19th edition of the Prom’Classic, the runners could not break Saïd TBIBI’s record (28’38), set 11 years ago. It is noteworthy that no one was able to complete the 10 km race in less than 30 minutes.
It was Mohamed SERGHINI (30’06), winner of the 10 km of Cannes last year, who crossed the finish line first, closely followed by James THEURI (30’10). The two men engaged in an impressive duel throughout the race, before a final, decisive sprint by SERGHINI.
The 3rd place went to Belgian Emmanuel LEJEUNE, who completed the 10 km in 30’38.
Among the other favorites were Yosi GOASDOUE (30’36, 5th), Paul LALIRE (30’47, 8th), Charik ABDRRAZAK (31’03, 20th), and Pierre URRUTY (31’06, 25th).
Ophélie CLAUDE BOXBERGER wins her first Prom’Classic
In the women’s category, Ophélie CLAUDE BOXBERGER, one of the favorites, won the event with a time of 33’28, simultaneously beating her personal best for the distance.
Behind her, it’s the Prom’Classic record holder, Sophie DUARTE, who, with a time of 32’21 in 2014, takes the second step of the podium, reaching the finish line in 34’20.
Aurore GUERIN completes the podium (34’38).
Mélanie DOUTART finishes just off the podium by 2 small seconds (34’30), while Fanny PRUVOST is 6th (35’32).
Local officials… and children also in the spotlight
Two mayors from the 06 (Alpes-Maritimes) also completed the 10 km that make up this Prom’Classic. These were the Mayor of Nice, Christian ESTROSI (54’31) and the Mayor of Grasse, Jérome VIAUD (1h08’13).
Two starts were also given for the children. The 10/11 years old on a distance of 1.5 km, while the youngest (8/9 years old) covered 750 m. Congratulations to them!
This 19th edition of the Prom’Classic, returning to the Promenade des Anglais, for the first time since the tragic events of July 2016, has been an (almost) total success.
The wind somewhat spoiling the athletes’ performance, as if inviting you all to come or return next year, for an even more spectacular race.
