The pandemic does not stop the thirst for protest of a Nice-based collective (they form and dissolve with varying membership) that is focused on the “global security” law which the Parliament is currently examining before voting on the final text.
The protest agenda is filled with demands and injunctions to the Government, and upon reading them, you find a mixed list of measures that are sometimes under municipal jurisdiction. What reassures is the creed: “As long as these liberty-restricting texts are not abandoned, we will tirelessly defend our rights and freedoms.” In truth, the main thing is to protest. Then, there will always be a good reason for having done so.
For volunteers, the meeting is at 2 PM at Place Garibaldi.
The text of the appeal:
• We demand the withdrawal of the “Global Security” law, the National Law Enforcement Plan (SNMO), and the law “reinforcing respect for republican principles,” previously called “against separatism.”
• We refuse the multiplication of measures that roll back the right to information, particularly that of informing about police violence with the selection of journalists established by the SNMO.
• We reject the endless expansion of surveillance devices such as drones and body cameras, as well as the extension of recording political or trade union opinions, philosophical or religious beliefs, health data, lifestyle habits, or social media activity of individuals allegedly threatening public safety.
• We condemn the logic of the law “reinforcing respect for republican principles” which stigmatizes Muslim populations and challenges the principles of freedom of association and the 1905 law establishing secularism.
• We demand truth and justice for Maïcol and for all victims of police violence.
• We oppose the local authorities’ plan to make Nice a “model city” of global surveillance and the resulting security madness with “smart city,” “Reporty,” drones, and facial or emotion recognition cameras!
• We also affirm our refusal to see this mobilization exploited by “anti-mask,” “anti-vaccine” movements and/or individuals aiming to spread conspiracy theories about the current pandemic.
