AS Cannes close to being bought by an American billionaire?

After OGC Nice was bought by Jim Ratcliffe in 2019, another billionaire could become the owner of a football club on the French Riviera.

According to the Italian media outlet “Il Tempo,” an American billionaire, Dan Friedkin, has plans to acquire AS Cannes.

At 56 years old, the businessman made his fortune in car sales before venturing into film production, winning a Palme d’Or with The Square at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017.

Since August 2020, the San Diego native has entered the world of football with his acquisition of one of Italy’s biggest clubs: AS Roma. The Texan is now reportedly interested in a second club, albeit of a completely different caliber.

Indeed, despite the rich history of the Cannes club, which has seen players like Zinรฉdine Zidane, Patrick Vieira, and Johan Micoud, the team is far from its past success, currently playing in National 2.

It’s not the sports aspect that would interest Friedkin, but rather the attractiveness and international influence of Cannes. After conquering the Palais des Festivals et des Congrรจs in Cannes, he now wants to charm the Pierre de Coubertin stadium.

Also according to the Italian media, the agreement between the American and the president, Anny Courtade, could be finalized in the coming weeks.
