What better way to spend a confined evening than with a classic French film? Nominated for the 2015 César Awards, the film was one of that year’s successes with nearly 7.5 million admissions in theaters.

“La Famille Bélier” is a French comedy-drama released in 2014. The film was directed by Éric Lartigau, in collaboration with the writers Victoria Bedos, Stanislas Carré de Malberg, and Thomas Bidegain. In this work, the main character, portrayed by Louane Emera, is named Paula Bélier. Other main characters such as Paula’s parents and Mr. Thomasson are played by Karin Viard, François Damiens, and Éric Elmosnino, respectively.

This production is a social representation of deafness. The theme of disability is handled with elegance and humor. It is distinguished by the absence of pity or sentimentality, which adds an emotional touch that makes the characters endearing.

Synopsis: Paula Bélier lives on a farm in Mayenne with her parents, Gigi and Rodolphe, and her brother Quentin, who are deaf. The teenager has just joined the high school choir, where she is noticed by her demanding teacher, Mr. Thomasson, for her vocal talent. At the same time, her father Rodolphe decides to run in the local elections against Lapidus, the outgoing mayor. Meanwhile, Paula meets the handsome Gabriel in the choir.
