Today, just over a third of registered members in sports federations are women. This issue is also found in everyday sports activities.
On average, women engage in sports less and stop at a younger age. This is because sports are a field where sexist prejudices are particularly prevalent. To remedy this, a long-term grassroots effort is required: “in gyms, schools, neighborhoods, and of course within clubs.”
Elected officials have a role to play, particularly by providing subsidies to sports clubs “when they have more girls between the ages of 12 and 16 and manage to keep them.”
Raising awareness in primary school playgrounds is also encouraged.
Today, the importance of local authorities is all the more crucial as the government seems to be withdrawing from the topic, notably by removing the budget line from the National Center for the Development of Sport (CNDS) dedicated to women’s sport.
No less than 19.23 million euros in subsidies will no longer be allocated for territorial actions in favor of sports for women and girls.
