Facing a lack of playing time, he left the Côte d’Azur in January to join Clermont Foot 63 on loan. In a few weeks, the former Rennes player will return to Nice.
Already loaned out during the 2020-2021 season to Lausanne in Switzerland, at the Ineos affiliate club, Lucas Da Cunha still needed to gain playing time this season with a view to becoming a full-fledged player for the Gym next season.
With only 10 appearances in the first part of the season, the 21-year-old needed to play more regularly on the championship pitches. Christophe Galtier wanted to send him on loan to a Ligue 1 club, and it was to Clermont that Da Cunha arrived.
This move to Auvergne was a good decision since under the guidance of former Aiglon Pascal Gastien (89-93), the attacking midfielder participated in 13 matches, starting 9 times, and managed to score 2 goals (against Rennes and then Angers).
Questioned by the newspaper “La Montagne” after his team’s victory against Montpellier, Da Cunha discussed his future and his coach’s desire to keep him permanently in his squad:
“Pascal Gastien wants to keep me? Is that true? (smiles). Well… It’s cool to have a coach who relies on you, it’s definitely pleasing. But for now, there haven’t been any talks. The discussions, before I came here, were about five months, to finish the season. So naturally, this summer, I will first return to Nice, and of course, try to establish myself there…”
Lucas Da Cunha has thus affirmed his desire to return to the Gym to establish himself there. Now, we wait to see if Christophe Galtier will count on him.
