The Matisse-Picasso exhibition will take place from June 23 to September 29, 2018, at the Matisse Museum. It is created with the exceptional support of the Picasso Museum-Paris and has received the prestigious label of “Exhibition of National General Interest” 2018, awarded by the Minister of Culture, Franรงoise Nyssen.
The inauguration of the Matisse and Picasso exhibition, titled “The Comedy of the Model,” imagined by Claudine Grammont, director of the Matisse Museum, took place last night in the presence of Mayor Christian Estrosi and several patrons. It is a unique exhibition for the city of Nice as the last events of this kind took place in London, Paris, and New York in 2002.
This exhibition is part of the Picasso-Mรฉditerranรฉe program, an international cultural event that today gathers more than seventy-five institutions around it. The ambitious project is the result of three years of work. The first steering committee of the exhibition took place at the Nice Opera, where all the shores of the Mediterranean regularly came together. The objective of this gathering is primarily to “strengthen the ties between all the shores of the Mediterranean.” It is also an opportunity to bring together the art of two 20th-century artists, who were long divided between rivalry and friendship.
Presented at the Matisse Museum until September 29, the exhibition features more than one hundred and twenty-five different works by the two artists, spread over an area of 500 square meters. It is divided into four sections: Projecting, Transforming, Desiring, and Possessing.
The cultural program around the exhibition will be quite varied until the month of September. Several concerts and a ballet are planned in different districts of the city.
