Otherwise, it would be fatal. The primary, this tool invented by parties to survive themselves, would backfire against its creators. Everything is still to play for, of course.
The candidates can bury their resentment, run an “inventive” campaign, as Manuel Valls puts it, they can “unify”, win back the “citizens”, and persuade them that posing as “anti-system” is also… a system!
They can still demonstrate that the Belle Alliance Populaire lives up to its adjectives. “The beautiful alliance” was also the place name where the Battle of Waterloo was fought.
