The Secretary of State for Sports, Thierry Braillard, and the World Wide Fund for Nature France (WWF) have secured an agreement for the twenty largest international sporting events held in France to sign a commitment to fifteen eco-responsible actions.
Respect for the environment is thus imposed as a condition for organizing these major events.
Responsible food sourcing and purchasing, waste recycling, the management of water and energy consumption, sustainable mobility, biodiversity preservation, as well as accessibility and the promotion of gender equality in leadership positions are the priority areas among the commitments made by the organizers of these major sporting events, such as Roland-Garros or the Tour de France.
Initiated by the State Secretariat for Sports and WWF France, this commitment is a foundational step.
“Sport, through the values it embodies, is an essential vector for defending the fight against climate change and taking concrete action. The success of this challenge requires the mobilization of civil society, local authorities, and businesses,” declared Thierry Braillard.
This world-first initiative, based on ambitious and quantifiable goals, confirms that environmental responsibility is now at the heart of the requirements for organizers of major international sporting events in France, as explained in a WWF statement.
